The Ladies Man by Charles Morey depicts one Dr. Hercule Molineaux, who was recently married to Yvonne Molineaux, who tells “one, tiny, little, hardly noticeable lie” to cover an embarrassing indiscretion. All chaos breaks loose as one lie tumbles into a cascade of increasingly convoluted deceptions, misunderstandings, and mistaken identities.
Being the properties manager for the show, I was responsible for keeping track of set dressing, and hand props, constructing the build/buy list for all properties, and making repairs to all furniture and props that needed them. The set designer, Sean Saari, had a dark brown, red, silver and gold color palette already established, as well as a vision for what furniture would occupy what space, so my only job was to help complete the vision.
The majority of the furniture repairs centered around paint and trim touch-ups. We had all of the furniture and hand props used for the production already in storage, so with a select number of repairs, they were ready to go. A pink, green, and gold tea set, burgundy ledger, and red encyclopedias as substitutes for doctor’s books were all picked out and stored away. The pouf was assessed for damage, the trim was replaced with two types of gold ribbon, and the structure on the bottom was reinforced with some scrap 2x4 blocks.
My favorite project was creating a faux marble top for a table we found on the side of the road around the production studio. It already had some intricate baroque detailing, it just needed a finish on the top. Utilizing some lauan, paint, and gloss varnish, the black and gold marble pieces were attached and ready to go.
During the run of the show, I helped pre-set the show, transition the set from act one to act two, and I was assigned to help rotate the wall revealing the dressmaker’s secret. While two of us rotated the wall unit, a third person helped open and close the stage left wall flap to allow for the wall to move and then disappear back into the stationary illusion.
If I had to change something about this process, I would have spent more time repairing the chaise lounges because the coverings have been abused by how many times they’ve been used for various shows. Overall, I enjoyed working on this gorgeous set and these gorgeous pieces.
